Chapter 21

The thunder boomed around us as we ran the distance to Diesel’s house. We were both in decent shape and made it back in under twenty minutes. Would have been faster if it wasn’t dark and Diesel didn’t trip over every rock. The only thing lighting our way were the flashes of lightning that cracked across the sky as we ran.

We crashed onto the porch, and Diesel flung the door open, ushering me inside before he followed. He dropped his pack, stepping across the floor to start a fire in the hearth. I followed suit, dropping my gear. Rainwater soaked me to the skin, my clothes dripped puddles onto the floor. I pulled my hat and hood off, luckily most of my hair was spared from the onslaught. Just the little bits around the edges of my face were moist. I yanked my boots off, pouring the contents of them back out the door.

The bedroll that was strapped below my pack was damp and would grow mold if it didn’t get dried out. Water drenched my pack, but the contents were mostly dry. I pulled everything out, setting them on the old couch.

Diesel had the fire roaring in the hearth and turned to his room to change his clothes—I assumed, since he was as soaked as me. He shut the door, leaving me in silence. I took my pack and bedroll, setting them by the fire to dry for the night. I shucked the outer layers of my clothes, hanging them up to dry as well. When Diesel came out of his room, I stood in front of the fire in my tank top and pants, shivering from the rain. He changed clothes and wore a dry shirt, soft-looking pants, and bare feet.

He gave me a quick once-over before returning to his room. When he stepped back out, he had more clothes clutched in his hand.

“Here,” he said, tossing me the clothes. “Put those on before you freeze to death.”

I let them fall on the floor in front of my feet. “I’ll be fine.”

He gave me a scathing look. “You can change in my room,” he grumbled before grabbing his fully loaded pack to check it as well.

The clothes on my trembling body would not dry out anytime soon. I snatched the clothes off the floor and stepped into Diesel’s room, shutting the door. The walls chipped and faded—a shade of off-putting yellow from years of neglect covered them. The room simply held an old, rusted metal bedframe with a mattress on top. A few blankets and a bearskin adorned his mattress. My mouth tipped up in a smile at the memory of how proud he was to take down the old grizzly a few years ago.

A small wooden dresser laid next to his bed. It held his clothes and whatever other things he valued. My eyes immediately landed on the necklace that sat on top of the dresser. I walked over to scrutinize it. A simple necklace, a thin silver chain attached to a round pendant of turquoise.
